it was 4am
when i awoke.
all the lights
in the house were on.
i got up to find
her dressed for the day.
though she was not
up already,
but still up.

she had already
read all her books,
played with all her toys,
and was moving on to
opening all my
bottles in the
after i put her
back to bed,
i laid in my own,
unable to sleep
thinking about the fact
 my 3-year-old
had just spent
2 1/2 hours
totally unattended.
what was next,
finding the matches?
downing a bunch
of those yummy
star-shaped vitamins???
not just a literal
wake-up call. . .

oh, that wind was bitter
on my cheeks and even
that extra sweater
i threw on underneath
wasn't doing the trick.
of course it was
the day i decided
to do my running
around on foot.
when i stumbled upon
that starbucks that
opened recently,
the first in russia,
my, what a welcome sight.

i ordered myself
a small carmel
hot chocolate and
spinach danish
and was already
when i realized my
drink cost nearly
eight dollars.

i didn't care.
it was
and kept me
until my
next destination.

and if those
darned hats weren't
in the way,
our hair would have
been whipping in
the wind.

our mom pulled us
that fast.

oh, and in a matter
of moments
and a few
swift, courageous
and excited moves. . .

we morph from
parents of a baby
and a toddler,
into parents
of two toddlers
what a bittersweet day. . .

take it or leave it?
(i.e. keep them or take them back)

p.s. they were on sale. . .

to my girls

in my efforts to
ever improve in
the parenting arena,
a few of my thoughts
for the new year include:

relax more
say no less
sympathize more
expect less
play more
lose patience less
explain more
worry less
encourage more
hurry less
savor more

midnight oil

after that
very long and drawn-out
ritualistic battle
to get her to go to
and stay in bed. . .
it finally grew quiet.
i only noticed why
an hour later
when i saw her light on.

that's why.

and we wait
for that little
breath of spring
to grace our
long, dreary
and cold winter.

one more thing

oh yeah,
and one last thing
that happened

i became one of them.
(or one of you. . .)

sister love

Tuesday, January 15, 2008

and tonight
it was boris eifman's
'my jerusalem.'
 pure genius.
i wish you could have
saw what i saw
and felt what i felt.

ask me on a night
like tonight,
and i love
living here.

and then there are
those days
when i am so glad
for the excuse
to just stay home.
it's cold out.
we've all got colds.
and there's nowhere we
need to be.

while in new york
i searched in vain
for fresh cranberries.
and when i returned to moscow
miraculously they
were here to greet me.
they were even
ocean spray.
so we put them to good use.

we donned our new aprons.
and some of us, bowls. . .

found ocean spray's
own recipe here
(the very best)

and set to work.

and mmmmm. . .
was it delish.

it cut again for days

i would too, if i
