making do

saturday we looked
for the violin store.
but never found it.

monday we made
our own violin.
and were perfectly happy.

doubly happy when
we (she) thought
to make it
into a cello.

we'll find that
store someday.

as i was tickling her
and she was eating it up,
i thought about how
it wouldn't last forever.

she won't always let me
blow into her stomach;
she won't giggle and scream in
delight as i shake the trash bag
open before putting it into the can,
asking me to do it
again and again;

she won't have so much fun
pulling out avi's jars of food
or cans of beans and lining
them up on the kitchen floor;

she won't giggle like it's
going out of style just by peering
into avi's bed as avi sits inside
and they interact one with another;

she won't want me to "do
a helicopter" and then an airplane
and then a truck, and then a rocket,
and then a train with
spoonfuls of food;

she won't have the tradition
of naming whose toothbrush
is whose every time she puts
hers back into the cup at night;

she won't want her cd put on
so that she can dance to
the music by marching around
in circles shaking
one of avi's rattles;

she won't want me to do
"rock a bye baby" with her
to get her into bed at night;

she won't play ring around
the rosie with me ("pocka wosie")
or ask me to sing
"i am a child of God" or
"popcorn popping" or "i love
to see the temple" or "wheels
on the bus go round and round"
for the 50th time;

she won't scream in delight if i
chase her, or get so excited to
put a coin or two in her piggy bank
or to jump onto mom's bed,
or walk around the house
pretending to talk on her cell
phone, head cocked to the side,
looking around with slow blinks
and all sorts of facial
expression and intonation;

she won't giggle uncontrollably
as i push her on the swing
higher and higher;

she won't have to stop on our
walks over and over to point
out all the different air
conditioners and which
ones are working and
which ones aren't.

and i vowed to engrave
in my memory those
fleeting specks
of time.

there are times
when pure logic
just doesn't
do the job.

when i was pregnant
with avi,
all i wanted were
limes and sugar cookies.

now, 2 years later,
and i finally have the
ambition and energy
to tackle such a
project as a batch
of sugar cookies.

all in the name of easter,
and with a little help
from my friends. . .

or should i say friend.
poor avi.

and as much as i cringe
at every grain of
sugar that goes into
her mouth,
you just gotta
let her lick
the beater!
("one for you, one for me")

the sun even shined
all day and it almost
felt like spring. . .

someday it will all
come together
(or should i say, separate)
but today,

it's still:
U is for зонтик
V is for скрипка.

bomb shelter
in front yard.

cross that one
off your
preparedness list.

goodbye, hello.

last week
when i met alex for lunch,
my phone died.
like, died died.

he was a good friend
for a long time.
and i'll miss him.

but not that much.
because today when
i met alex for lunch,
he surprised me
with a new friend.

and boy, is he
brilliant and beautiful.
(as are you, alex. . .)

i think we'll be friends
for life.

the durova theatre
has been making
children smile,
gasp, laugh, and
stare in amazement
for 95 years.
ask any russian who
grew up in moscow,
and they have
fond childhood memories
from this place.

on saturday we made
some of our own.

at least until
milla was frightened
by the scary guys
and had to be escorted out.
"i want the people
to go home, mama."

nothing like a
bear on a scooter,
an albino porcupine,
and a jumproping monkey
to raise your spirits
on a saturday afternoon.

there's no doubt we're
outgrowing our
small apartment.
she still sleeps
in our room
because there's
really nowhere else
to put her.

but when i come to
bed at night
and see her sleeping,
i'm glad our apartment
is too small.
i run my hand along
her little body,
stick my finger
in her little hands,
squeeze her little feet,
get down close
enough to smell her
even at the risk of
waking her.
when i'm lucky she
stirs enough to do a
little baby lip-smacking.
and on that note,
i climb into my bed
and go to sleep.

could you come up with
a cooler
oil & vinegar bottle
if you tried?

who are these geniuses?

last year
one of our goals
was to buy art.

this year we're
doing it.

Tuesday, March 11, 2008

well, milla. . .

and the beginnings of
the difficult
questions are
underway. . .

"where's dusk, mom?"

"where's confused?"

"where's it's true, mom?"

it's right there, milla,
see it?

pure delight

thursday's surprises.

can you smell spring???

and, oh wow,

a little stop
in the french pastry shop
on the way home
from work never did
anyone any harm. . .

to nearly stumble
over this little
curled up in a ball
outside your
bedroom door when
you wake up
in the morning. . .

priceless. . .
