and still in the 60s,
the day before july.

avi's got a new pair
of silver galoshes.

we will take this
over last june's
sweltering heat
any day.

splash splash.

busy

and unfortunately,
there are only
two times a year
in moscow
that prices are
semi-reasonable.

the semi-annual
clearance sales.

i'm busy doing
very important
things.

uh uh

and for the most part
it was really
just a typical day
at the park,
that day we brought
the bubbles.
and though she looks
very cute
in this picture,
she was not looking cute
when she was
throwing the bubbles
and screaming
when it was time
to go home.

but much more disturbing
were those two boys
who brought their
play machine guns

and pretended
to blow up
myself and my children
the whole time
we were there.

now i know some things
you end up caving on
("i swear, when i have kids
i will NEVER change a diaper
in public. . .")
but letting my boys play
with toy guns?

uh uh.

the old gallery

it had been awhile
since i'd been
to the old tretyakov gallery.

that gold mine of russian works
spanning the years
and encapsulating
volumes of history
rich with turmoil, struggle,
war, victory, determination,
labor, and hope.
the soul of russia
just drips from
the ceiling.

and oh, how
filipp malyavin
masterfully
portrays the peasant woman
in one of my
all-time favorites.

can you not feel it???

check

and it's just
plain fact
that no two little girls
can grow up together
and have a complete,
happy childhood
without a little
table and chair set.

we can now
check that one off the list
and then keep
whittling away
at it. . .

vip vip vip

i daresay
there are few,
if any,
places in the world
where this business plan
would fly.

a million dollar car
(yes, literally)
made into a vip taxi.

oh, muscovites. . .
(sigh)

thought

nature vs. nurture

that overflowing heap
in the front closet
has me
both pondering the thought
as well as thanking
my lucky stars
that it's little girls shoes
i get to buy.
surely little boys shoes
cannot be as fun.

homecoming

oh and yes
there are the
clean dishes to be
put away
and the plants to be watered
and the endless unpacking
and the mountains of laundry
and the vacuuming up
of the sand that made it
home with you
and the putting away
putting away
putting away. . .
but there's still
something great
to be said
for coming home.
with all those
sweet memories
tucked away.

our arrival
at our destination
is one of those
amazing memories.

bet you never guess
where we were. . .

the dusting

and we dust off
the beach gear

and head south
and west.

see you in a week!
(tanned and refreshed)

shabbat

i mean,
she does have jewish blood
and all.
but i never thought
shabbat
would be one of her first words.

but once we watched
my choir is performing soon,
she can't get enough.

and every time i
open up the computer, it's
"sha-ba, sha-ba, sha-ba. . ."
until it gets turned on.
over and over again.

early riser

6:30 am

and the sun's
been doing it's thing
for hours already.
me?
contentedly doing my thing
behind dark curtains
and a mask.

today's walk
