masha says
it's the wettest summer
she ever remembers.

it's definitely wet.

yesterday and today
we needed jackets.

but it's cool with me.

fresh air

in brief.

i knew
i should have
called to see if they
were still open.
i just had a hunch.

cause after psyching
them up for that
fun kids entertainment club
with the clowns
and the rides
and the balls
and the food,
it's not cool when you show up
and they're closed down.

and then you've got to
settle for that
boring pizza place
next door,
where balloons are the only fun
they can offer.

i hate it
when disneyland burns down.

and as we were leaving
i told baba lelya
that we always leave her place
a little bit richer.

a bundle of wildflowers,
a bar of chocolate,
tomorrow's lunch,
and a host of memories
to stay with us
long after she's left us.

i looked at an apartment.
just looked.

and i wish i could say
i dreamt about it
all night.
instead i laid awake
until 4:30 am
thinking about how
we could redesign it.

this is what it looked like
inside my head.

thank goodness
finally saved me from myself.

le petit echo

le petit echo de la mode
and it's fragile,
thin and browning paper
survived 76 years
to be put on milla's wall.

what a trooper.

thanks for lunch.

thanks dasha
for bringing me that
le pain quotidien baguette

thanks mary
for introducing me
to natural peanut butter
many moons ago
(as well as natural toothpaste)

thanks kai
for hauling it across
the ocean to me.

and thanks russia
for making a delicious
unfiltered clover honey.

and oh,
i had long awaited
the children's book industry
in russia
to become the art form
americans know it to be.

with one quick flip
through oksana grivina's book
she had just as quickly
become my new favorite
children's book
author and illustrator.

"for breakfast i eat
hot cereal
and drink milk."

"if i were the
queen of england,
for breakfast
i would eat pastries."

"if i were a cow,
i would chew grass."

"if i were a secret agent,
i would eat secret messages."

"if i were a germ,
i would eat dirty hands."

"if i were grandfather frost,
i would eat icicles."

"if i were a doll,
i would eat plastic cookies."

of course in the end,
our friend is happy to be eating
her hot cereal and
drinking her milk.

is this not one of
life's great lessons?

moving around those
oven racks
solved two mysteries.

1. what that burning smell
has been the last
few things i've baked.

2. where the heck
that road atlas went.

slated for this evening's activities:

1. lecture about opening
the oven door.

2. prayers of thanks for a house
that is still standing.

and how did i spend
the holiday weekend,
you ask?

i went to this place. . .

and stayed in this cabin. . .

and pondered my life
thus far
in this spot. . .

and let my feet feel
right at home
in this grass. . .

and rode a bike
all through
this countryside. . .

and rented a
russian bath house
at sunset
in this spot. . .
(alex jumped into
this water. . .)

let off these
larger than life
fireworks. . .

slept in this
cozy bed. . .

saw many
a house of the
likes of this. . .

and reveled in the
beauty that
i could not only see
but feel. . .

thanks, my love,
for an
unforgettable birthday!

and that
early birthday gift
lit the fire
for a weekend filled with
surprise festivities.

i'm the lucky girl!
